The United Nations Environment Program, UNEP, is an organization that promotes the use of sustainable options on a global scale. They do this across the globe with their offices in places like Beijing, Cairo, and Brussels. The goal of UNEP is to spread environmental awareness across the world and they do so through different methods, such as multimedia projects, lectures, and music.

The United Nations Environmental Program uses music to help spread environmental awareness. The reason they do this is because music “transcends race, religion, gender, income [and] age.” In other words, music speaks to everyone. Even if two people have nothing to relate to each other with, they can both get the same, or similar, messages out of music. The United Nations Environmental Program uses many groups that do not use lyrics in their pieces, so that the audience will not get bogged down in trying to understand what a singer is saying and just take in the message of what the instrumentals are trying to convey. However, there are other events in the tour that use speaking, such as the monologues and short films.

What is really neat is that UNEP sets up concert tours and has these musicians that travel the globe. However, these concerts are not limited to music. As stated earlier, other art forms are a part of the UNEP’s toolbox, so monologues, documentaries, and multimedia projects are also performed and put on display for the audience. Of course, tThe tour comes to every place that holds their offices, but it is not limited to those areas. Performers in the past have included Tyra Penn and Her Band of Snakes, The Lonely Solider Monologues: Women Serving in Iraq, and Gary Smith Band and Friends.

The United Nations Environmental Program is really neat in that it does not focus on one specific environmental issue. Resource efficiency, chemicals and waste, environmental governance, ecosystem management, disasters and conflicts, and climate change are the main goals and focuses of the UNEP for the 2015 year. The concern is brought from “regional flora and fauna” from differing parts of the globe. Based off of the gathered information, the UNEP can decide and focus on certain topics and themes when they visit different areas of the globe. This allows them to talk about issues that are more relevant to the areas they are visiting, so that the audience is more capable to understand and see the messages and information the artists are putting out there for them.

The main goal of the United Nations Environmental Program is the bring awareness to audiences across the globes. Through differing art forms, the artists involved with the program are able to educate audiences worldwide in a more entertaining way. Because of the entertainment value, audiences are more likely to pay attention and take away the messages that the artists are offering to share. Since the focus of the audience is more there, the audience will be way more likely to share the messages of the UNEP and start practicing greener alternatives to everyday.
